When the Spell Lifts

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.10

Meaning · English

Matter decays; the soul does not. One God rules them both. By dwelling on him, joining with him, becoming him more fully, the world's illusion finally ends.

Three things are being sorted. Nature's raw material changes and wears out. The self inside each living being does not die. Above both stands a single God who governs them, so neither matter nor the soul is the cause on its own. Getting free takes three movements: holding the mind on him, joining with him, and slowly taking on his nature. At the end of that, the whole false picture of the world falls away.

On a hot highway, a pool of water seems to lie across the road ahead. Drive toward it and it keeps slipping away. Once you know it is only heated air bending the light, it stops fooling you. The world's false picture ends the same way, by drawing near to what is real rather than fighting it.
