What Knowing God Brings
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.11
Meaning · English
Knowing God, every bond drops away; afflictions spent, birth and death end. Meditating on him brings, when the body falls, a third state: sovereignty over all, alone, every wish fulfilled.
Knowing God brings two things. First, every bond that ties a person down falls away. Second, once the afflictions that trouble the mind have worn out, the round of being born and dying stops. A third gain comes from steady meditation on him, at the moment the body drops away: lordship over everything. The one who reaches it stands alone, mixed with nothing else, and wants nothing more, because every wish is already met.
A boat tied to a jetty by a handful of ropes rocks with every passing wave. Cast off the last rope and it is no longer knocked against the dock. It moves out into open water, held by nothing on shore. The ropes are the bonds. Open water is the freedom past birth and death.
