A Question Before the Battle

Bhagavad Gita 2.2

Meaning · English

The Supreme Lord said: Where has this delusion come upon you, Arjun, in this hour of peril? It is practiced by crude people. It does not lead to the higher abodes, and it leads only to disgrace.

Three words carry it. Kashmala is a stain or clouding, the dullness that settles over a mind when it is overcome. Delusion is the nearest English word. Anarya means not noble, a crude or unrefined person, and Krishna calls this clouding their habit. Akirti is the opposite of fame: disgrace, a bad name. Krishna opens with a question, asking where this came from, as though it did not belong to Arjuna at all. He has just found him in tears, and he names the cloud as one that arrived in an hour of peril, when both armies stand ready and clear sight is needed most. He gives it three marks. It is the way of crude people, it does not lead to the higher abodes, and it ends in disgrace. The problem he answers is that Arjuna is about to lay down his bow and call it compassion, while Krishna sees confusion. He asks Arjuna to look at his own state and name it before acting on it. Shankara reads the delusion as ignorance that breeds sorrow and attachment. Ramanuja reads it as bewilderment born of affection for kin, standing in the way of Arjuna's duty. Madhva reads the rebuke as meant to rouse Arjuna rather than to wound him.

A windscreen fogs over on a cold morning while the car is already on the road. The road has not moved or changed, but the glass has clouded and the driver begins to doubt it. Krishna's question is the hand wiping the glass. The delusion is the fog, and the battlefield is the road that was always there.

1. Today, when you notice a sudden urge to back out of something you had already judged right to do, stop for one minute and ask, silently, where this came from. 2. Name it in a few plain words: fear, tiredness, or dislike of the discomfort ahead. 3. Write the reason you first chose the task on a scrap of paper, and read it over once. 4. Then decide, and notice whether the feeling is still as loud as it was.

A junior doctor stands outside a small room where a family waits for bad news. Her hands have gone cold. A voice in her head says she is not the right person, that someone senior should do it, that she could come back later. Krishna's question changes the moment in steps. First it asks where the feeling came from, which makes it something to look at rather than something to obey. Second, she can see that it is fear, loud because the hour is hard, and not a fact about her fitness. Third, with the fog named, she can recall why the task is hers and what the family needs from her: plain words and steady presence. She opens the door. Ordinary experience agrees that fear narrows thought and makes retreat sound like wisdom. The verse does not promise the fear will vanish, that the news will be softer, or that the conversation will go well. It does not take the place of support from colleagues or a doctor when anxiety is more than a passing wave.
