Rise From Faintheartedness

Bhagavad Gita 2.3

Meaning · English

Do not yield to this unmanliness, Arjun, son of Pritha. It does not befit you. Give up this petty weakness of the heart and arise, conqueror of enemies.

Three words carry the weight. Klaibya is unmanliness, a loss of nerve. Hridaya-daurbalya is weakness of the heart: hridaya is the heart, daurbalya is feebleness. Krishna calls it kshudra, petty or small. He does not call Arjuna's love small. He calls the collapse small, because it shrinks a large man to less than his size. Uttishtha is the plain command to arise, to stand up. Krishna tells Arjuna not to give way to this, because it does not befit him. He names Arjuna as Partha, son of Pritha, and as param-tapa, conqueror of enemies, so that Arjuna hears his own name and his own record. The reason is the one Krishna began with in the previous verse. Arjuna has sunk in a moment of peril, and the sinking is not who he is. So Krishna asks him to let go of the weakness and stand. He does not yet tell him what to do once standing. Shankara reads this as a rousing rebuke that shakes Arjuna out of a confusion born of attachment, so that teaching can begin. Ramanuja reads the weakness as grief rooted in affection for kin, which blocks Arjuna from seeing his duty. Madhva takes it as a firm call back to Arjuna's own task as a warrior.

A rider's horse stops at a stream and will not cross. The rider does not shout at the water. He steadies his seat, says the horse's name, and asks it to step forward. The stream is the crisis, the stalled horse is the faltering heart, and the steady voice is Krishna calling Arjuna by name.

1. Today, pick one small thing you have been putting off because it feels uncomfortable, such as a phone call or a hard reply. 2. Say your own name quietly and ask yourself whether the delay fits the person you know yourself to be. 3. Stand up, literally, from where you sit, and begin it within five minutes. 4. Afterward, notice how the dread compared with the doing.

A daughter stands outside her father's room with the car keys in her hand. She has to tell him he can no longer drive. Her chest is tight, and she tells herself she will do it tomorrow. The verse speaks to that moment. First, it names the tightness as weakness of the heart, not as a verdict on her love. Second, it asks whether the delay fits who she is. She is the one he trusts to tell him the truth. Third, it asks her to stand and go in, without waiting for the fear to leave first. She can still speak gently, sit beside him, and let him be angry. Ordinary experience agrees that dread usually grows while we avoid a task and shrinks once we begin. The verse does not promise that her father will take it well, that the grief will lift, or that the conversation will be easy. It also does not say that every hesitation is cowardice. Some pauses are wisdom, and a doctor or a trusted relative may need to be part of such a decision.
