Meaning · English

Arjun said: How, Madhusudan, can I answer Bheeshma and Dronacharya with arrows in battle? Both are worthy of worship, destroyer of enemies. How shall I shoot at them?

Arjuna is the speaker, and this is his view in that moment, not yet the book's teaching. Three words carry it. Katham means how, and it is a real question, not a refusal: he cannot see the way. Pratiyotsyami means shall I shoot, to answer with the same weapon. He pictures himself returning blows to men who once taught and guarded him. Puja-arha means worthy of worship, a person you bow to, not merely respect. Bheeshma is the grandsire of both families and Drona is Arjuna's own archery teacher. He also calls Krishna by two names: Madhusudan, slayer of the demon Madhu, and Arisudana, destroyer of enemies. Those titles hint at a gap: Krishna destroys enemies, but these two do not feel like enemies to Arjuna. That is the problem he gives. The act is not strange to him, since he is a warrior. What stops him is that the targets are people owed reverence, and shooting at them feels like a wrong against worship itself. Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva each read this as the moment grief clouds Arjuna's duty, though they explain that cloud in their own ways. Nothing in the verse asks for a decision yet. It only states the knot.

A woodcutter is told to fell a huge old banyan that shaded his village school and gave his grandfather rest. His axe is sharp and his arms are strong, yet he stands with it raised and cannot swing. The tree is Bheeshma and Drona, and the held axe is Arjuna's bow.

1. Today, think of one person you owe a great deal to: a teacher, an elder, a parent. Take two minutes to name what they gave you. 2. Then recall one time you had to disagree with someone like that. Notice where in your body the reluctance sat: chest, throat or hands. 3. Write one sentence that begins 'What stops me is...' and finish it honestly, without arguing with it.

A woman sits in her car outside her old college mentor's house. She has come to tell him she will not sign the recommendation he wrote against a colleague's promotion, and she has rehearsed the speech all week. Her hand will not open the door. The verse names her state. Before any argument about right and wrong, there is the plain fact that the person across from her is someone she reveres, and this makes the act feel like a betrayal of her own gratitude. Seeing it step by step helps: first she names who the person is to her, then what she must say, then the gap between the two. Saying the knot aloud, as Arjuna does, makes it something she can look at instead of something that freezes her. Ordinary experience confirms that dread of hurting a person we respect often shows up as a body that will not move. The verse does not promise that naming the knot dissolves it, or that the conversation will go well, or that the pain of opposing someone dear will lift. It only shows a person describing the difficulty truthfully.
