Meaning · English

Better to live in this world by begging than to kill my noble teachers and elders. If I killed them, desiring gain, I would enjoy here only pleasures stained with their blood.

Arjuna is speaking, and this is his view in that moment, not Krishna's teaching. Three words carry it. Shreyas means what is better, the good that lasts, as against what merely pleases. Bhaikshya is alms, food got by begging, the lowest means of living for a warrior. Artha-kama joins artha, gain or wealth, with kama, desire: the wish to profit. Arjuna weighs two lives. In one he begs and keeps his teachers alive. In the other he wins a kingdom and eats pleasures wet with the blood of Bhishma and Drona, whom he named in the verse before. His reason is plain. He sees a kingdom won this way as already spoiled, so no enjoyment of it could be clean. He chooses the beggar's bowl over a feast with that stain. Shankara reads such words as coming from affection and sorrow clouding Arjuna's judgment. Ramanuja reads them as the grief of a man who loves his kin and has not yet learned the nature of the self. Madhva takes the reverence for teachers as real, and as something Krishna must answer with knowledge of duty. What the words ask of the listener is to notice how Arjuna's honest feeling is already arguing a case.

A man is handed a seat at a wedding feast, and he knows the food was bought with money taken from a friend who trusted him. The dishes smell wonderful, yet every bite tastes of that betrayal. Arjuna pictures his kingdom as that table: abundant, and ruined by how it was paid for.

1. Tonight, think of one gain you have wanted lately, a promotion, a purchase, an argument won. 2. Ask who would pay for it, and write their name or role on a scrap of paper. 3. Sit with that name for two minutes and notice whether the wanting grows or shrinks. 4. If it shrinks, say nothing yet. Check again tomorrow morning, when the first feeling has faded.

A young woman learned baking from her aunt, who runs the family shop. A buyer now offers her a good partnership if she helps push the aunt out. She sits in the cold back room after closing, flour on her hands, and the offer feels both exciting and wrong. Arjuna's words describe that exact split. He names what he would gain and who would pay, then asks whether he could enjoy it. Step by step, the verse puts the cost next to the prize, so the cost cannot hide behind the wanting. It also shows that a strong feeling can be an honest signal and still not settle the question; the next verses, in the text, show Arjuna admitting he is confused. Ordinary experience bears out that gains taken at a loved person's expense often sour in the keeping. The verse does not say what she should do, it does not say the offer is wicked, and it does not ease the pain of a hard choice between family and future.
