Fruit of the Three Modes
Bhagavad Gita 14.16
Meaning · English
Of action done purely, the result is said to be goodness, and it is pure. The result of passion is pain. The result of the mode of ignorance is ignorance.
Three words carry this. Sukrita means well done: su is good, krita is done. Phala is fruit, what an action ripens into. Ajnana is not-knowing: a is not, jnana is knowing. Krishna tells Arjuna that every action ripens, and the fruit takes the colour of the mode behind it. Action done cleanly, from sattva, the mode of goodness, ripens as something pure and clear. Action driven by rajas, the mode of passion, ripens as pain. Action sunk in tamas, the mode of ignorance, ripens as more ignorance. The last one repeats itself: the fruit is the same as the seed. Krishna has just spoken of where people end up under each mode, so he is now naming what each one produces while they live. Arjuna is about to act in the hardest moment of his life, and the teaching puts the weight on the state of mind behind a deed, not only on the deed. It asks the listener to look at what is driving an action before trusting it. Shankara reads the first line as the pure fruit of righteous action. Ramanuja takes that purity as leading the person toward knowledge. Madhva reads the three fruits as the results fixed for each mode.
A lamp with clean glass gives a steady, clear light. The same flame in a draught flickers, smokes and burns down fast. A lamp with a cloth thrown over it gives only darkness. The flame is the action, and the three conditions are the three modes.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and do it without hurry for ten minutes. 2. Afterwards, note how you feel: clear, tense or dull. 3. Once this evening, ask what was driving your most rushed task. Wanting something, or only tiredness? 4. Tomorrow, repeat the same task and change only the drive behind it.
A man runs a roadside tea stall. At dawn he looks at oil that has already been used three times and wonders whether to use it a fourth. Krishna's teaching says the fruit of an act follows the state that produced it. If he acts from clear care, he throws the oil out and loses a little money, and the day starts light. If he acts from craving for profit, the sale is made but the worry stays, and he watches every customer's face. If he acts from dull indifference, nothing is weighed at all and he learns nothing from it. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, hurried mind chooses worse than a rested one. The teaching does not promise that clean action brings profit, or spares him loss, illness or grief. It says only what each kind of action leaves behind in the person who did it.
