The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 14 · The Three Qualities

Where Clarity and Greed Begin

Bhagavad Gita 14.17

Meaning · English

From the mode of goodness, knowledge arises. From the mode of passion comes greed, indeed. From the mode of ignorance arise negligence and delusion, and ignorance too.

Krishna names a source for each inner state. Sattva, goodness, is the clear and steady quality of mind, and knowledge (jnana) rises from it. Rajas, passion, is restless wanting, and its product is lobha, greed: the grip that says more, and not yet enough. Tamas, ignorance, is heaviness and fog. It gives three things: pramada, carelessness about what matters; moha, a bewildered mistaking of one thing for another; and ajnana, plain not-knowing. Taken together, the verse says what a person sees, wants and neglects depends on which quality is strongest in them at that time. Krishna gives this as a diagnosis. The previous verse spoke of results, and this one goes back to the root of those results. Its point is that a muddled mind or a hungry one has a cause, and the cause can be noticed. Shankara reads these as workings of nature in the mind, not the self. Ramanuja reads them as strands that bind the soul, with knowledge as goodness's gift. Madhva also treats them as qualities of nature that shape a person's inclinations.

A pond. Left still, the mud settles and you can see the bottom. Stir it with a stick and it churns brown, and a thick green scum covers a pond left unattended. Clear water is knowledge, the stirring is greed, and the scum is carelessness and confusion.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one decision from today and ask which state it came from: clear, grasping, or careless. 2. Next time you want something badly, wait ten minutes before acting. Notice whether the wanting is greed or a real need. 3. Pick one task you have been neglecting. Spend five minutes on it today, when you are rested, and notice how the fog lifts.

A grandfather stands at a bank counter, handed a leaflet promising to double his savings in a year. He is tired, it is late in the day, and the young man across the desk is smiling. Here the verse works step by step. First, name the pull: that is greed, and Krishna says it comes from passion. Second, ask whether he is clear or foggy, because the leaflet asks to be signed before it is understood. Third, delay. Take it home, read it, ask his daughter. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness and hunger weaken judgment, so a person who knows this does not sign things at the end of a long day. Sleep, a meal and a day to think are the plain tools. The verse does not promise the scheme is honest or dishonest, nor does it protect him from loss. It does not replace a lawyer or a trusted adviser where one is needed. It offers a way to see which state he is deciding from.
