Then that place must be searched out, from which those who have gone do not come back again. I take refuge in that original Supreme Person, from whom the ancient stream of activity first flowed out.
Three words carry the verse. Parimargitavyam comes from a root meaning a track or path, the way a hunter follows prints. So the place is not stumbled on; it is searched out step by step. Prapadye is pra, toward, plus pad, to step or fall at the feet. It means taking refuge, a step toward someone, not a thought about them. Pravritti is outgoing activity, the whole busy flow of the world's doing, and the verse calls it old and streamed forth from one source. The plain sense: after the axe of detachment has cut the tree, Krishna tells Arjuna what comes next. A destination has to be sought, a place from which those who arrive do not return. Seeking it takes the form of refuge in the original Purusha, the person from whom all this activity began. The reason sits in the tree itself. Roots that keep growing downward bind a person to action and return. Cutting is not enough; there must be somewhere to go. Shankara reads the place as the Supreme Self, reached through knowledge. Ramanuja reads the refuge as full surrender to the Supreme Person, Narayana. Madhva reads it as devotion to Vishnu, who is distinct from the soul and grants the goal by grace.
Picture walking up a small creek on a hot day, past every bend and side channel, until you reach the spot where water simply rises from the ground. Everything downstream was that spring spreading out. The world's busy activity is the creek; the original Person is the spring, and refuge means walking back to it.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and name the three busiest things you did today. Ask only where each one started: a need, a fear, a promise. 2. Tomorrow morning, before your first task, stand still for one minute and say in your own words that you are beginning from the source and not from the rush. 3. Once this week, stop one task halfway, breathe slowly three times, then continue. Notice whether the pace of what follows changes.
A woman lies awake at three in the morning after being laid off, phone glowing, refreshing job listings, rehearsing conversations, drafting messages she will not send. Every hour is busy and none of it arrives anywhere. Krishna's words to Arjuna point her differently, step by step. First, the activity has a source, and it is older than her worry. Second, a place exists where the going out and returning stops, and it is something to be sought, not simply wished for. Third, refuge is a movement toward that source. She can put the phone down, sit up, and turn her attention there for a few minutes, as the text describes, before taking up the next task. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: restless activity at night leaves a person more tired and no clearer. The verse does not promise her a job, an end to her fear, or a plan by morning. Nor does it replace rest, a doctor if sleeplessness persists, or the practical work of looking for income. It names where to turn, not what will happen next.
