Free from vanity and delusion, having overcome the evils of attachment, dwelling constantly in the self and God, freed from the desire to enjoy the senses, liberated from the dualities known as pleasure and pain, the unbewildered attain that eternal abode.

Krishna lists who arrives at the place he has just told Arjuna to search for. The list is made of qualities, not rank or ritual. Three words carry most of it. Mana is vanity, the habit of measuring yourself against others. Moha is delusion, mistaking what passes for what lasts. Together they are the first thing to go. Sanga is attachment, the clinging that sticks to people, things and outcomes; Krishna calls its results doshas, faults, and says they must be overcome. Adhyatma-nitya means living always in the self and in God, so the mind has a home to return to. Then desire for sense enjoyment falls away, and with it the pull of dvandva, the pairs. Pleasure and pain are the pair named here. The person is no longer tossed between them. Such people are amudha, unbewildered: they see clearly where others are dazed. They reach the abode that does not decay. The reason is the problem from the earlier verses: the world is like a deep-rooted tree, and what binds us to it is pride, clinging and craving. Remove those and the road is clear. Krishna asks Arjuna to look at himself against this list. Shankara reads the abode as the Self known as Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as the world of the Supreme Person, reached by devotion. Madhva also takes it as the Lord's own abode, with the soul remaining distinct.

A kite on a windy day pulls at its string, lifted and dropped by every gust. Cut the knots that tie it to the ground and to the hands below, and it no longer jerks with each change. The gusts are pleasure and pain; the knots are pride, clinging and craving; a steady mind is what remains.

1. Tonight, write down one thing you did today partly to look good to others. Just name it, nothing more. 2. Tomorrow, when a small pleasure or annoyance arrives, such as a good tea or a delayed bus, pause for three breaths and notice how strongly you want it to stay or to go. 3. Once this week, give up one small wish for enjoyment, like a second helping or a scroll through your phone, and notice what the wanting feels like until it fades.

A man sits in his car outside the house after a day when a colleague was praised and he was not. He feels small, then angry, then wants a drink or an hour of noise to cover it. The verse would work on this in steps. He first sees the sting as vanity: he is measuring himself against someone else. He notes the pull toward the drink as craving for relief, not a need. He lets the pair of feelings, pride hurt and comfort wanted, rise and pass without obeying either. Then he walks in the door and greets his family as he is. Ordinary experience confirms that moods shift less when we stop feeding them. The text teaches that a person who lives steadily in the self and God is no longer bewildered by such swings. It does not promise the day's slight will not hurt, or that grief and illness will not come. It also does not replace a doctor or a counsellor when low mood or drinking has become heavy and persistent.
