Neither sun nor moon nor fire illumines that place. Having gone there, they never return. That is my supreme abode.
Three words carry the verse. Bhasayate means to cause to shine, to light up. Sun, moon and fire are the three great lamps of the world, and each one only lights up other things. Dhama means abode, a place where one stays, and it also carries the sense of radiance. Krishna uses the word for a home that is itself light. Nivartante comes from a root meaning to turn back. Those who reach this place do not turn round and come back. Krishna tells Arjuna that the place he speaks of needs none of the lamps we depend on. It is not seen by borrowed light. It is lit from within. He calls it paramam, highest, and mama, mine. It is his own dwelling, and arrival there is final. The reason he gives follows from the verses before. Arjuna has just heard of a world that is a tree with its roots above, and of the search for the place from which beings do not fall back into wandering. This verse answers what that place is like. Shankara reads the abode as the self-luminous Brahman, whose light is not lent by anything else. Ramanuja reads it as the radiant realm of Vishnu, to which the freed soul goes. Madhva reads it as the abode of the Lord, where released souls live in his presence. All three keep the same two points: it shines by itself, and there is no return.
A walker on a dark road holds a torch, and everything he sees is only what the torch happens to touch. He reaches home, where the rooms are already bright and the torch is put down. Sun, moon and fire are the torches. The abode is the home that needs none.
1. Tonight at dusk, sit by a window for five minutes before switching on any lamp. Watch the light go. 2. Name each light you then turn on: lamp, screen, flame. Notice that each one only shows you things. 3. Switch the lights off again for one minute and sit quietly. Notice what is still aware of the dark. 4. Stop there. Nothing needs to be achieved.
A man walks home through a city street during a power cut. The shop signs are dead, his phone torch is at two percent, and for a moment he feels the old fear of not seeing. Then he stops and waits. Ordinary experience confirms that eyes adjust to the dark within a few minutes, and the shapes of the road and the kerb come back. Here is how the verse reads in that moment. He had thought the lights were what let him see. When they go out, something in him is still looking, still steady, and it was never lit by them. Krishna tells Arjuna that his supreme abode is like this at the deepest level: sun, moon and fire do not light it, and those who reach it do not come back. The man is not claiming to have reached it. He has only had a small glimpse of how much he leans on borrowed light. The verse does not promise that the street is safe, that the power will return, or that fear disappears. A man in real danger on a dark road should still call for help and take care.
