A Fragment of Me

Bhagavad Gita 15.7

Meaning · English

Only a fragment of mine, eternal, becomes the embodied soul in the world of living beings. Bound by material nature, it struggles with the mind and the five senses, which make six.

Three words carry the verse. Amsha means a fragment, a part. Jiva-bhuta means one who has become a living, embodied being. Karshati means to drag, to pull hard, to struggle. Krishna tells Arjuna that every embodied soul is a fragment of himself, and that this fragment is eternal. It was never made at birth and does not end at death. Yet in the world it is bound by prakriti, material nature, and it works with six instruments: the mind and the five senses. The word for struggle is strong. The soul is pulled and strained by the very tools it lives through. Krishna says this to answer a problem: why does a being that belongs to him, and is eternal, seem so tired and tangled? His reason is that it is tied to nature's machinery and keeps pulling at it. The listener is asked to see himself as part of something larger, and not only as a body with appetites. Shankara reads the fragment as a figure of speech, since the infinite cannot be cut into pieces. Ramanuja takes it literally as a real part of God that stays distinct from him. Madhva holds the soul to be a real, separate dependent of God.

A spark leaps from a campfire and lands on wet ground. It is made of the same fire and glows the same way, but damp earth presses on it and it must work to stay lit. The spark is the soul, the fire is Krishna, and the damp ground is nature's hold.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep and name the six instruments you used today: what you saw, heard, touched, tasted, smelled, and what your mind chewed on. 2. Pick the one that pulled hardest and say, in plain words, where it dragged you. 3. Tomorrow, when that same pull comes, pause for three breaths before following it. Notice who is being pulled and who is watching.

A mother stands in a hospital corridor at midnight, her son asleep in the ward. She is hungry, her phone keeps lighting up, her mind replays every what-if, and the smell of antiseptic sickens her. Every one of her six instruments is pulling at her at once. Krishna's words name this exactly: the struggle is real, and the pull comes from the senses and mind working in the world. First, the verse lets her see the tug as the strain of instruments, not as the whole of her. Second, it tells her that what is pulled is a fragment of something eternal, so she is more than the worry. Third, she can do one small thing, such as eating something plain or turning the phone face down, and let the rest wait. Ordinary experience confirms that tired, hungry people are pulled harder by every impulse. The verse does not take her son's illness away, does not ease the fear, and is no replacement for the doctors caring for him.
