Diti sat before Indra, the Thousand-eyed, with only a withered bud left of the child she had hoped for. Indra's hand had cut it into seven. She spoke softly. "This is no fault of yours, Lord of the Gods. The blame is mine alone. But since you have taken this hope from me, grant me one thing. From this blighted bud, let seven bright spirits rise to rule the skies. Let them race through heaven on the shoulders of the winds, my children, famous as the Maruts, gods of storms. Send one to Brahma's world, let one guard yours, and let the third move through the lower air under the name Vayu. Let the other four be gods who roam through space and obey you."

Indra, who had struck down the fierce Vali, joined his hands and answered her. "Your children will take heavenly forms and carry the names you have chosen. By my word they will be called the Maruts. They will drink the amrit and stand beside me, free of fear, age and sickness, and they will fly through all three worlds." So mother and son settled it there among the hermits, and both went home content to the skies. "This is the place," Vishvamitra told Rama, "where Indra once lived. Here Alambusha bore Vishala to old Ikshvaku, and Vishala built this town of Vishala. From him the line came down, king after king, to Sumati, who rules here now. We will sleep here tonight, and at first light go on to see the king of Mithila."

King Sumati heard that Vishvamitra had come, and hurried out with his priest and his lords to greet him. He bowed low, hands joined, and asked after the sage's welfare. "You have blessed my eyes by coming," he said. "No one could be happier than I am now." When the courtesies were done, he looked at the two young men. "These princes walk like lions and elephants. They carry bows, quivers and swords, and they look like the Asvins themselves. How did they come here on foot? Who are they, and what are they looking for?" Vishvamitra told him everything: how the boys had stayed with him in the forest and killed the demons there. Sumati was amazed, and looked after his guests well. They rested that night, and in the morning set out for Mithila.

When Janaka's city first came into view, the hermits cried out with joy at the sight of it. But close to the city Rama noticed a sacred wood, overgrown, empty and old. "Sir," he said, "I'd like to know what hermit lived here long ago." Vishvamitra answered him. "Listen, Rama. This was the grove of Gautama, once as lovely as heaven, honoured even by the gods. Here he lived with his wife Ahalya and kept his hard disciplines for thousands of years. One day, while Gautama was away, Indra came and saw how beautiful Ahalya was. He took on the sage's own shape and said to her, 'Love shouldn't wait, my dear. It should take its moment when it can.' She knew it was Indra under the disguise. But desire moved her, and she gave in.

"Afterwards she whispered to him, 'Go now, Lord of the Gods. Save yourself and me from Gautama.' Indra fled the cottage, shaking with fear. But out in the grove he ran straight into Gautama coming home, fresh from his bath in the river, carrying firewood and sacred grass for his rites, shining like a flame. Gods and demons alike feared this man's anger, so great was the power his austerities had earned. Indra's heart sank. And when Gautama saw the Thousand-eyed in his own hermit's form, he understood all of it, and his fury broke loose. 'You took my shape and did this,' he said. 'So this curse will cling to you: from now on you will be sexless.' It was no empty threat. Indra's strength drained from him, and his body went cold.

"Then Gautama turned on his wife. 'For countless years you will live here alone,' he told her, 'under the strictest vows, with ashes for your bed and air for your food. This grove will be your home, and no eye will see you. But when Rama, Dasharatha's son, comes into this wild place, his coming will wash away your stain. When you welcome him as your guest, your heart will be clean, you will have your true form again, and you will come back to my side.' Then Gautama went far away, to the heights of the Himalaya, and spent the long years there in hard discipline." So Rama, with Lakshmana, followed his guide into the grove. And there he saw her: a woman hidden from men, gods and demons alike, made radiant by her long vows.

She was like a flame half lost in smoke, like a full moon behind winter mist, like sunlight on water, too bright to hold. Until Rama came, no one had seen her. Now the two sons of Raghu, full of joy, touched her feet. She remembered Gautama's words and received them graciously. She brought water for their feet and the gifts a guest is owed, and Rama accepted them with proper courtesy. Then flowers fell from the sky like rain. Music rang out above, and the heavenly dancers and singers danced and sang. All the gods praised her together: "Be glad. Your long penance has made you clean, and you are one with your husband again." Gautama, who missed nothing, knew Rama was there. He hurried to the grove, honoured him, and took Ahalya back to his side, to share his life of discipline. Then Rama, welcomed with every honour, went on his way to Mithila.
