Sun Among Its Reflections
Bhagavata Purana 11.7.50
Meaning · English
With its rays the sun draws up the waters and, when the season comes, lets them go; it is not bound to them, as a herd-lord is not bound by his cows. So the yogi takes up the objects of the senses and releases them in their time, unjoined to them. The self is known as itself, without division. Though it seems to stand in forms and to have entered them, only the dull-minded see it as placed there, as the sun is seen standing in each reflection.
The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what he learned from the sun. Three words carry it. Guna here means the senses on one side and what they take in on the other; the commentators read the verse that way. It also means the rays. Yogi is one who is yoked to the self and not to things. Atma is the self, the one who is aware. The sun sends out rays and lifts water from the ground. When the season turns, it lets the water fall as rain. It keeps no hold on any of it. A herdsman likewise walks among his cows, and the cows do not own him. The yogi lives the same way. The senses take in sight, taste and sound, and in time they let them go. None of it sticks to him. The second verse says why. The self is known as itself, with no split into this and that. It seems to stand inside each body and each thing, as if it had gone into them. Those of coarse understanding take that appearance for fact. The sun is the picture: it is seen in every pool, yet it stays in the sky. Sridhara Svami reads the sun as the self, the pools as bodies. The teaching asks the listener to enjoy what comes and to let it go in its season.
After rain, a street is full of puddles, and each one holds a bright sun. A child might count a dozen suns. Then the puddles dry, one by one, and the single sun overhead is not less. The self is that sun, and bodies and circumstances are the puddles.
1. At your next meal, eat the first three mouthfuls slowly and notice the taste fully. 2. When the meal ends, say silently, "That was taken, and now it is released," and leave the table without hunting for more. 3. Once today, hand something back on time, such as a borrowed pen, a seat or a finished task, and notice what in you reaches after it. 4. At night, think of one thing you took in today and have already let go.
A man stands in the empty flat he rented for eight years, keys in his hand, the landlord due in ten minutes. Here is the cupboard where the children's heights were marked, the window where he drank his tea each morning. The verse would change the moment in steps. First he is allowed to have taken it fully: the years were lived, not skimmed. Next he hands over the keys as an act with its own season, not as a theft done to him. Then he notices that the one who watched all those mornings is still standing here, as undivided as before the lease began. He walks out without scraping the memories off the walls. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: things held loosely hurt less when they go. The verse does not promise he will feel nothing. It does not end sadness at leaving, and it does not replace talking to someone if the grief sits heavy for weeks. It describes how the sun lifts water without being wet.
