Hemalekha Teaches Hemachuda the Self

The story · English
After a short while, Hemalekha reached the palace at the doorkeeper's direction. She climbed the great tower of the house, shining like moonlight climbing a mountain. At the top she found her beloved, the king's son Hemachuda. He sat peaceful and still, his senses drawn in, quiet and unchanged. She came close and sat beside him on the same seat. Within half a moment he opened his eyes and saw her next to him. She looked at him, and at once, out of love, she embraced him. Then she spoke in a sweet voice. "My lord, why did you call me? I hope your body is well. Tell me the reason, since I came because of it."
Asked this way by his beloved, he answered her. "Dear one, you instructed me, and I sat down in this secluded place. I turned my thought wholly to finding the true nature of my own Self. But here is the strange part. Even while I gave myself to it, I could not find it as something apart. The Self is always already gained, and it is always shining. Yet any other appearing seems to cloud the clear view of it. So I held back every other appearing and settled myself firmly." He went on. "Then I saw darkness. After it I saw a different light. Somewhere I felt a great happiness. Tell me, dear one, what was this?"
"Is this the true form of the Self, or is it something else? Look into it carefully and tell me, so that I can know it for what it is." Asked this, Hemalekha, who understood both the higher and the lower, replied. "Listen, my love. I will tell you everything. Pay close attention. The effort you made to shut out the outer world was good. All who know the Self agree it is the main thing. Without that effort, no one has found it anywhere. Yet the effort is not what brings it about. The Self cannot be obtained, because it is already what you are. If it were something you could fail to have, it would not be you."
"So the stopping of outer things is not meant to win the Self. Here is a picture. A thing lies hidden in darkness. A lamp is brought, and it seems to be found, though it was there all along. Or take a man whose mind was in a whirl, and who lost a gold coin. When he quiets his other worries and settles his mind, he finds the coin again. The quieting did not make the coin. It only let him see what was already his. You did not recognize your Self there because you had no training in seeing it. A man new to light walks into a royal court at night. He sees the courtiers and the lamps, yet he does not know there is a light that shows them."
"Listen, dear one. When your stopping ended, you saw the darkness. Before you saw it, and after, something remained in you. Keep that feeling alive. It gives the highest joy. Most people here are seized by a great delusion and look only outward. They search and search and wear themselves out, and they never reach that feeling. There are scholars, skilled and sharp in argument, who still grieve day and night, because they have not known it. Words and clever study do not win that place. However long a learned man searches or reasons, he will not reach it, since it is not something to be grasped."
"You do not go far to get it. You rest, and it is found. It cannot be known by reasoning, and it shines where reasoning stops. Chasing it with action is like running after the shadow of your own head. A child looks at a thousand reflections in a clean mirror and never sees the mirror. In the same way people look at the world's reflections in the great mirror of the Self and do not know the Self. Someone who knows the sky does not take the world in it for the sky itself, and the world does not hide the sky. My lord, look finely. The world is knowing and the known. Knowing proves itself, and without it nothing is. It needs no proof, so no question can touch it."
"In that great mirror everything appears like reflections. Place and time do not limit it, since they appear within it, as things appear in the sky. Prince, look finely at your own form, where this whole world shines in one common awareness. Find it between sleep and waking, between one state of mind and another, and between the knower and the known. Reaching it, no one is deluded again. It has no form, taste, smell, touch or sound, no pain or pleasure, nothing to grasp and no one grasping. It holds all and is free of all. Look inward a little, let go of any thought of seeing, and be still like a blind man. Give up seeing and not seeing. Be what you are, and do it quickly." Hemachuda found that place. He rested in it a long while, and the outer world slipped out of his mind.
