The work of the five senses, toward color and the rest, is held to be bare registering alone. Speaking, grasping, moving, excreting and delight are the work of the other five.
The question is simple: what does each instrument of the body actually do? Samkhya answers with two lists. The five senses do alocana, a bare looking or registering. The eye takes in color, the tongue taste, the nose smell, the ear sound, the skin touch. The word matra, 'only', carries the weight. Gaudapada reads it as a fence. When someone says 'only alms are received', nothing else is received. In the same way the eye reaches color and never taste, and each sense stays within its own object. The five organs of action each have one task too. The voice speaks. The hands take hold. The feet move about. The anus lets go of what is left after food is digested. The genitals give delight, which Gaudapada glosses as the begetting of children. What follows is a division of labor. The senses supply raw material and the action organs carry out deeds. Judging, it seems, is left to the inner instruments discussed next. For Samkhya, all ten belong to prakriti, nature, which is everything that changes.
Picture a security camera above a shop door. It records whatever crosses the frame, but it cannot smell the bakery next door and it has no idea who is a thief. Each sense, for Samkhya, works like that camera. It catches its one kind of signal faithfully and leaves the deciding to something further inside.
Physiology agrees with part of this. Each sense has dedicated receptors and pathways. Light does not register as taste. The nervous system also separates sensory nerves from motor nerves, which loosely matches the split between knowing and acting. The idea of a purely bare sensation is shakier. Much current cognitive science holds that expectation and memory shape perception from the earliest stages, so an untouched 'just seeing' may never actually occur. The list of five action organs is a practical grouping, not a modern category. Excretion and reproduction are not usually filed beside speech. The deeper claim is still open. Samkhya treats the senses as material and places awareness itself in purusha, the witness. Physicalism holds that brains alone produce experience. Neuroscience maps what senses do, but how felt experience arises remains unexplained.
