Samkhya Karika 29

Meaning · English

Each of the three has its own mark, and that mark is its work, belonging to it alone. The work shared by all the instruments is the five vital airs, beginning with prana.

Earlier verses gave each outer sense its own job. This one asks two things. What do the three inner organs do? And is there anything all the instruments do together? Samkhya answers both. The three are buddhi (the intellect), ahamkara (the sense of 'I') and manas (the mind). Gaudapada explains that each one's defining mark is its activity. Buddhi decides. Ahamkara claims things as 'mine'. Manas deliberates, shaping what the senses bring (sankalpa). These belong to each alone. What all thirteen instruments share is breath, taken as five vital airs. Prana moves in mouth and nose. Apana carries downward and out. Samana sits in the middle and spreads food evenly. Udana rises from the navel to the head. Vyana pervades the whole body. Gaudapada adds the reason: only while prana is present do the instruments come into their own. On this view, the shared stirring of breath is what keeps all the instruments alive and working.

Picture a rowing crew on a river. Each rower has a seat, an oar and a stroke that is theirs alone. But the boat's steady glide forward belongs to no single rower. It is what all of them make together. The intellect, the sense of 'I', the mind and the senses are the rowers. The five breaths are the boat's shared motion.

Today's physiology agrees that thinking depends on breathing. Without oxygen the brain stops working within minutes. Breathing, digestion and circulation run largely through the autonomic nervous system, below conscious choice, which fits the idea of a shared activity that no single faculty owns. The five airs, though, have no modern match as five distinct things. Loosely they map onto inhalation, elimination, digestion, upward movements such as speech, and circulation, but physiology does not divide the body this way. The philosophical move is more striking. Samkhya places intellect, ego, mind and breath all on the side of prakriti, unconscious nature. Modern physicalism would agree about the cognitive functions. Samkhya then keeps consciousness itself apart, with purusha. Whether that separation is needed is still open, the question now called the hard problem.
