How Perception Shares Its Work

For what is perceived, the working of the four is said to happen at once, and also one after another. For what is not perceived, the working of the three likewise is preceded by that earlier perception.

When you notice something, how do the instruments share the work? Four are involved: one outer sense, such as the eye, plus three inner ones. First there is manas, the mind, which takes in what the sense delivers and frames questions about it. Ahamkara, the I-maker, stamps the experience as one's own. Buddhi, the intellect, settles what the thing is. With something present to the senses, Samkhya holds that the four can act all at once, and also in sequence. Gaudapada gives both cases. In the first, eye, mind, I-maker and intellect together see a post as a post. In the second, a traveller sees a far-off shape and the mind frames a doubt: post or man? He spots a vine or a bird on it. The intellect decides it is a post, and the I-maker makes that certainty firm. For things not present, past or future, only the three inner instruments work. Samkhya holds that even then they rest on an earlier sense experience.

Picture walking through a busy station. A close friend's face registers in a flash: you see her, notice her and know it is her, all in one moment. A face that only half looks familiar arrives in steps. You notice it, wonder, catch the walk, then decide. On the train home, you picture both faces with your eyes shut, working only from what you saw.

Cognitive science would recognise the broad pattern. Familiar things are often recognised fast and in parallel, while unclear ones get slower, step-by-step checking, much like the contrast between quick and deliberate thinking that psychologists describe. Memory and imagination are known to draw on the same sensory systems that handled the original experience. That fits the claim that recall rests on earlier perception, and it echoes empiricism, Hume's view that ideas are copies of impressions. Whether every concept, such as number or logic, comes from the senses is still argued. The fourfold division does not map onto distinct brain parts, and there is no clear organ that matches the I-maker. Samkhya also counts all four instruments as matter, not as awareness. That puts them on the side neuroscience can study and leaves the hard problem of consciousness open.
