Organs Moved by Purpose
Samkhya Karika 31
Meaning · English
Each takes up its own function, prompted by the intent of the others. The purusha's purpose alone is the cause; the instrument is set in motion by nothing else.
The question is simple. The organs of a person are the intellect (buddhi, which decides), the ego-sense (ahamkara, which says 'mine'), the mind (manas, which sorts what comes in), the senses and the organs of action. Samkhya counts all of them as prakriti, unconscious nature. So what makes them work, and work together? Samkhya answers in two parts. First, coordination: the three inner organs, buddhi, ahamkara and manas, each do only their own job, cued by the intent of the others. Gaudapada reads it this way: each grasps the other's intent and then takes up its own object, with no confusion between them. Second, cause: the only reason any of the thirteen organs act at all is the purpose of purusha, the conscious witness, which Samkhya holds is a separate principle. Gaudapada adds plainly that no Ishvara (God) and no other agent drives them. What follows is a mind with no inner manager. The work is done by parts of nature acting for the sake of consciousness.
Picture a bucket line at a burning shed. No one shouts orders. Each person turns when the neighbour's bucket arrives, passes it on, and turns back. The line holds because everyone is facing the same fire. The people are the organs, each doing one task on cue from the next. The fire that must be put out is the purusha's purpose.
Cognitive science agrees on one point. There is no small commander inside the head. Perception, memory and decision are spread across many brain systems that signal one another and settle into joint activity. Critics of the 'little man in the head' picture make the same move Samkhya makes: drop the inner controller. The disagreement is over why the parts run. Mainstream science explains brain function through causal mechanism and evolutionary history, not through serving a separate conscious self. Samkhya's purpose-driven nature, acting for a witness that is not matter, has no match in physics or biology. Whether consciousness is something over and above the working brain, the dualist's claim, or the brain's activity itself, the physicalist's claim, is still open. That is the hard problem of consciousness.
