Meaning · English

The instrument is of thirteen kinds; it seizes, holds and makes things known. Its work is tenfold: what is to be seized, what is to be held, and what is to be made known.

Samkhya has to explain how a mind that sits inside nature actually deals with the world. Its answer is a set of thirteen instruments, which it calls karana. Gaudapada lists them. There are three inner ones: buddhi, the deciding intellect; ahamkara, the sense of 'I'; and manas, the coordinating mind. There are five sense organs: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. And there are five organs of action: speech, hands, feet, the organ of excretion and the organ of generation. Together they do three jobs. They seize, they hold, and they show. Gaudapada gives the seizing and holding to the organs of action, and the showing, making things known, to the sense organs. This is Gaudapada's own reading; other commentators, such as Vachaspati Mishra, give holding to the inner instruments instead. Their field is tenfold. On the showing side are sound, touch, form, taste and smell. On the doing side are speaking, taking, moving, expelling and sexual pleasure. What the senses reveal, the organs of action grasp and keep. For Samkhya, all thirteen belong to prakriti, changing nature, and none of them is purusha, the conscious witness.

Picture a crane on a building site at night. Floodlights pick out the steel beam on the ground. The hook comes down and grabs it. The arm keeps it suspended while it swings into place. The lights only reveal and the hook only acts. The lights are the sense organs, showing. The hook's grab and the arm's grip are the organs of action, seizing and holding.

Modern physiology also splits the nervous system into sensory pathways that carry information in and motor pathways that carry commands out, so the basic division between showing and doing holds up well. The fivefold list of action organs is a classification of human activity, not anatomy. Medicine would not group speech, hands and the reproductive organ as one kind of thing. Cognitive science also blurs the line Samkhya draws, because seeing involves moving the eyes, and action is guided by constant sensing. More striking is where Samkhya puts intellect and ego: inside matter, as instruments. That fits much of today's philosophy of mind, which treats thinking as something a physical system does. Samkhya then sets awareness itself apart in purusha. That is a form of dualism, and whether experience can be explained physically, the hard problem, is still open.
