The inner instrument is threefold. The outer is tenfold and is called the field of those three. The outer works in present time; the inner instrument works in all three times.

The question is this: if the senses and the mind are all tools of experience, what really sets them apart? Samkhya's answer is time. The inner instrument, antahkarana, has three parts. Buddhi is the intellect that decides. Ahamkara is the sense of 'I' and 'mine'. Manas is the mind that sorts and intends. The outer instrument has ten parts. Five are senses: ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose. Five are organs of action: speech, hands, feet, and the organs of excretion and of generation. These ten are the field the inner three work on. Gaudapada makes the contrast concrete. The ear hears only the sound sounding now. The eye sees only the colour in front of it. Speech utters only the present word, and the hand grasps only the pot that is here. The intellect, though, can know a pot that is here, one that was, and one yet to come. The ego can claim each, and the mind can intend about each. Samkhya concludes that the senses stay locked to now, while past and future are reached only through the inner three.

Picture a person standing at a window. The glass shows only the street as it is this second, a passing bus or the light on a wall. The person behind it remembers yesterday's rain and is waiting for a friend due at six. The glass maps to the ten outer instruments. The one who remembers and expects maps to intellect, ego-sense and mind.

Cognitive science broadly agrees with the split. Sense receptors respond to stimulation happening now, while remembering the past and imagining the future depend on brain systems well beyond the sense organs. Two refinements complicate the picture. First, the senses' 'present' is a short, slightly delayed window, and the eye sees starlight that left long ago, so 'now' means what arrives now. Second, today's psychology holds that expectation shapes perception itself, so the boundary between outer and inner is blurrier than a clean division suggests. A further point stays open. Samkhya counts intellect, ego and mind as material, part of prakriti, nature, and places awareness in a separate witness, purusha. Neuroscience increasingly explains how memory and planning work, but whether that explains why any of it is experienced remains the unsettled hard problem of consciousness.
