Senses and Their Objects

Samkhya Karika 34

Meaning · English

Of these, the five organs of knowing take objects both specific and unspecific. Speech has sound as its object; the remaining organs have all five as their objects.

Of the ten outer organs, which one works on what? Samkhya answers in two halves. The five buddhindriyas, the 'organs of knowing,' are ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose. They take objects that are either specific or unspecific. Gaudapada reads this as a difference between kinds of beings. In humans, the senses show sound, touch, form, taste and smell as particular things, already marked by pleasure, pain or confusion. In gods, they show those objects without such marks. Then come the organs of action. Speech has one object, sound. Gaudapada notes that speech works the same way in gods and humans, since both speak and recite. The other four are hands, feet, the excretory organ and the generative organ. Each meets all five qualities, because each handles physical stuff that carries sound, touch, form, taste and smell together. Hands grasp it. Feet walk on earth, which has all five. The last two release substances made of the five. So, for Samkhya, knowing divides the world by quality, while most acting meets it whole.

Think of lifting a paper bag of oranges. Your nose gets only the citrus smell. Your eyes get only the orange colour, and your ears only the rustle. Your hand, lifting the bag, carries all of it at once: colour, smell, weight and sound together. Samkhya's organs of knowing are like the nose and eyes, each taking one quality. Hands, feet and the other action organs handle the whole thing.

Today's physiology keeps the core split. Sensory nerves carry signals in, and motor nerves carry commands out. That is close to Samkhya's organs of knowing and organs of action. Samkhya, though, counts the excretory and generative organs by what they do, not by how they are wired. The five-sense list is now known to be too short. Balance, body position, temperature, pain and signals from inside the body are separate senses. Psychology agrees that ordinary perception often arrives already coloured by liking or dislike. Physics would not describe objects as made of five qualities, and colour and smell are now understood partly as the perceiver's contribution. Gaudapada's reading about gods perceiving unmarked objects has no modern counterpart. It lies outside what evidence can test.
