Meaning · English
Because the intellect, together with the other inner instruments, takes in every object, the threefold instrument is the one who keeps the door, and the remaining instruments are the doors.
When you see a cup, what actually takes it in: the eye, or something behind the eye? Samkhya answers with a ranking. The buddhi, the intellect, is the faculty that settles and decides. It works with the ahamkara, the sense of 'I' and 'mine', and the manas, the mind that sorts and coordinates. Together these three make the inner instrument. Because this inner instrument grasps every object, it keeps the door. The other ten instruments are only the doors. Five are powers of sensing: hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell. Five are powers of acting: speech, grasping, moving, excreting and procreating. Gaudapada gives the reason in terms of time. The inner instrument takes in sound and the rest across past, present and future. As verse 33 puts it, the doors open only onto what is here now. So an eye on its own does not perceive. It lets something through, and perception is worked up, though not yet witnessed, where the threefold instrument receives it.
Picture an office building with several entrances, each with a camera. At the front desk one guard watches all the screens. The guard keeps a logbook of who came yesterday and a list of who is expected tomorrow. The doors only open and shut. The guard is the one who notices, remembers and decides. The entrances are the ten outer powers. The guard is the threefold inner instrument.
Cognitive science broadly agrees with the shape of this claim. The eye and ear turn light and sound into signals. Recognition, meaning and decision depend on processing in the brain. Damage there can leave the eye healthy and still take away the ability to recognise what it sees, as in some forms of agnosia. Gaudapada's point about time also fits. Memory and expectation shape what we perceive, while the receptors register only the present. The fit has limits. Samkhya places intellect, ego-sense and mind inside prakriti, nature, and holds that none of them is conscious. That looks like a physicalist account of cognition. Yet the school also keeps purusha, a separate witness that is pure consciousness, to account for awareness itself. Whether processing alone can explain experience, the hard problem of consciousness, is still an open question.
