Lamps Before the Intellect

Samkhya Karika 36

Meaning · English

These products of the gunas are like lamps, each unlike the others. They light up the whole of what the purusha seeks and hand it over to the intellect.

The question is how anything reaches the knower at all. Samkhya holds that purusha, pure consciousness, does nothing. All activity belongs to prakriti, nature. So the organs that do the work must be nature's own. They are 'products of the gunas', made from the three strands that compose nature: sattva (clarity), rajas (motion) and tamas (inertia). Each organ is like a lamp. It shows what is there without owning what it shows. Each is unlike the others. The eye shows colour, the ear shows sound, and none can do another's job. Gaudapada reads the list widely: the five senses of knowing, the five organs of action, ahamkara (the sense of 'I') and manas (the mind that sorts). Each lights its own share of what purusha is after, then places it in buddhi, the intellect. Gaudapada gives the reason. Purusha experiences only what rests in buddhi, pleasure and pain included. So the whole apparatus, intellect too, is material, and it works for a witness that never moves.

Picture a newspaper office late at night. One reporter covers sport, another the courts, another the weather. None of them can file the other's story. Each sends copy to the editor's desk, and only the finished page reaches the owner. The reporters are the organs, the editor's desk is buddhi, and the owner who reads but never writes is purusha.

Much of the picture fits current neuroscience. The senses are specialised channels. Visual, auditory and touch signals are processed in separate systems before being integrated for decision and report. Samkhya also places mind, ego-sense and intellect inside nature, which is close to physicalism about cognition: thinking, sorting and judging are physical processes. The difference lies in the last step. Samkhya holds that consciousness itself is a separate principle that receives what the intellect presents, a dualist view. Many philosophers, Daniel Dennett among them, doubt there is any single final place where everything is gathered for a viewer. Neuroscience explains a great deal about how information is routed and combined. It has not explained why any of it is felt from the inside. That is the hard problem of consciousness, and it remains open.
