Seeing the Final Difference

Samkhya Karika 37

Because it is the intellect that brings about every experience for the witness, that same intellect, in turn, singles out the subtle difference between nature and the witness.

If the witness only watches, what does the work of experiencing, and what could ever show the witness that it is not the show? Samkhya's answer is that one faculty does both. The buddhi, the intellect or deciding mind, belongs to prakriti, nature, all that changes. The intellect is not itself conscious. Purusha, pure consciousness, does nothing; it only witnesses. Gaudapada reads 'every experience' broadly. It covers whatever any sense meets, past, present or future, for gods, humans and animals alike, gathered through the senses and the organs of action and handed to the intellect. Since the intellect assembles all of it, the intellect alone is placed to draw the last distinction too. As Gaudapada lists it, the intellect shows this: here is nature, the three gunas (clarity, activity, inertia) in balance; here the intellect, the ego-sense, the five subtle elements, the eleven senses and the five gross elements; and here, apart from all of these, the witness. The line is 'subtle', he adds, because it cannot be reached without long discipline. Seeing it clearly is release.

A stagehand has run every light and sound cue all evening, so the audience has seen the whole play. At the end she brings up the house lights. Now the painted set looks like painted boards, and the audience can see they were never on that stage. The stagehand is the intellect. The play is experience. The house lights are the final discernment that sets the witness apart.

Cognitive science knows something close to the verse's second half. The brain does not only process the world. It also monitors its own processing, and psychologists call this metacognition. So the idea that the same system that delivers experience can also turn back and discriminate fits well with what is known. Samkhya's twist is unusual among dualisms. It places thinking, deciding and even this final insight on the material side, and keeps only bare awareness apart. In this it anticipates something like what is now called the hard problem of consciousness: explaining every function still leaves open why there is awareness at all. Physicalists deny there is any separate witness to find. Psychology does describe a related skill, stepping back from one's thoughts, and treats it as helpful. Whether such insight frees anything in Samkhya's sense is a contemplative claim, not a testable one.
