Meaning · English
The subtle elements are unspecified. From these five come the five gross elements. These are called the specified, and they are calm, harsh and dulling.
Samkhya has traced prakriti, nature, unfolding into mind and senses. The next question is what the senses actually meet. Samkhya answers in two layers. First come the five tanmatras, the 'that-only' elements: bare sound, touch, form, taste and smell. They are called unspecified because they lack the varied calm, harsh and dull character. Gaudapada adds that they arise from ahamkara, the sense of 'I', and that they are purely pleasant, free of pain and delusion, objects fit for gods. From them come the five gross elements, which Gaudapada pairs as: space from sound, air from touch, fire from form, water from taste, earth from smell. These are the specified, the world humans live in. Each can be calm and bring ease, harsh and bring pain, or dull and bring bewilderment. Gaudapada's example is open space. It is a relief after a cramped room, cruel to someone caught in wind and rain, and baffling to a traveller lost on a forest path. In Samkhya's view, matter at this level always carries these three tones.
Picture one song from a neighbour's speaker. At a party it lifts the room. At two in the morning, when you need sleep, it grates. Played over a conversation you are trying to follow, it leaves you muddled. The sound waves are the same each time. That is the gross, specified element: one thing that can soothe, grate or blur depending on who meets it.
Physics and chemistry no longer treat earth, water, fire, air and space as basic elements. Matter is explained through atoms, fields and forces, and the tanmatras, pure sense-potentials that sit beneath objects, have no modern counterpart. The second half of the claim holds up better. Psychology and physiology agree that one stimulus can feel pleasant or unpleasant depending on the state of the body. Warm air is welcome when you are chilled and oppressive when you are overheated. The difference lies in where each view puts the feeling. Samkhya places the calm, harsh and dull tones in matter itself. Most modern accounts place them in the meeting between an organism and its surroundings. Whether qualities such as colour belong to objects or to perceivers is still argued, from Locke's primary and secondary qualities to current philosophy of mind.
