Three Kinds of Body

Meaning · English
The specific things are of three kinds: the subtle, those born of mother and father, and the great elements. Of these, the subtle are fixed and lasting; those born of mother and father fall away.
The question behind it: what is a living body made of, and which part of it lasts? Samkhya answers with three kinds of vishesha, its name for things concrete enough to be felt as calm, turbulent or dull. First, the subtle body. Gaudapada reads it as built from the subtle elements and carrying the intellect and the rest. Second, the body born of mother and father. Third, the great elements, earth, water, fire, air and space, which fill that body out. Gaudapada gives the sequence. At conception the subtle body is joined with the parents' blood and seed. In the womb it is fed through the navel cord by what the mother eats and drinks. Each element has a job: space gives room, air growth, fire ripening, water binding, earth support. The point of the list is the split. Gaudapada explains that the subtle body stays fixed and carries on from birth to birth until knowledge frees the person. The parent-born body falls away at death, and its matter returns to earth and the other elements.
A hermit crab lives in a borrowed shell. When the shell no longer suits it, the crab leaves and moves into another, and the empty shell breaks down on the beach. The crab maps onto the subtle body, which Samkhya says moves on intact. The shell is the body born of parents, which is used for one life and then left behind.
Much of the physical picture matches today's physiology. A body does begin from the joining of cells from two parents. A fetus is nourished through the umbilical cord from what the mother eats. After death the body decomposes and its matter returns to soil, water and air. Conservation of matter in physics offers a loose comparison. The subtle body is different. Nothing in neuroscience or biology supports a fine body that leaves at death and enters a new birth. Mainstream physicalism treats the mind as dependent on the brain. One point is easily missed. Samkhya counts the subtle body as part of nature, so it is material, however fine. Consciousness belongs to purusha alone. That differs from Descartes' dualism of mind and matter. The hard problem of consciousness remains open, but it gives no evidence for rebirth.
