Formed at the very first, unhindered, lasting, made of the great principle down to the subtle elements, the mark passes from birth to birth. By itself it experiences nothing. It is steeped in dispositions.
If the body born of parents falls away at death, what goes on to the next life? Samkhya's answer is the linga, literally the 'mark': a subtle body. It runs from mahat, the great principle, also called buddhi or intellect, down to the tanmatras, the bare potentials of sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Gaudapada lists its parts: intellect, ahamkara (the sense of 'I'), manas (the mind) and the five subtle elements. It was produced first, at the start of creation. It is unhindered: being subtle, Gaudapada says, it passes through mountains without obstruction. It is fixed, lasting until liberating knowledge arises. On its own it experiences nothing. It can enjoy and suffer only after it takes on an outer body from father and mother. And it is coloured by the bhavas, dispositions such as virtue, which later verses explain. At the world's dissolution it sinks back into prakriti, nature's source, and it travels again when the next creation begins. So what migrates is character and mind, not flesh.
Picture a SIM card. Lying in a drawer, it makes no calls and shows no messages. Slip it into a phone and your number and contacts come alive. Move it to a new handset and they go with it. The subtle body works the same way. It carries a person's stored leanings, yet it can live through nothing until it is fitted into a body of flesh.
The striking move is where Samkhya puts the mind. Intellect, ego and mind sit on the side of prakriti, nature, made of subtle stuff rather than of consciousness. Today's physicalism also treats thinking, memory and personality as workings of a material system, the brain. On that point the two lines of thought run surprisingly close. They part on what happens at death. Mainstream neuroscience finds memory and temperament tied to living neural tissue, and it has no accepted evidence that anything carries them past the brain's end. Rebirth remains outside established science. The talk of dispositions fits well with what psychology says about temperament and habit: character behaves like a durable pattern that shapes how experience is met. Whether that pattern could exist without a brain is a question science has not supported. Philosophy still debates it.
