As a painting cannot stand without something to rest on, and a shadow cannot be without a post or the like, so the subtle body does not stand unsupported, without the specific elements.

The question behind it is simple. If a subtle body passes from life to life, could it ever float free between bodies? Samkhya says no. The linga, the subtle body, is never bare. It needs a support, as a painting needs a wall and a shadow needs a post or a tree to cast it. That support is the visheshas, the 'specific' elements. Gaudapada glosses the specifics first with the unspecific subtle elements, the tanmatras: the bare potentials of sound, touch, form, taste and smell. He then takes them as the gross body made of the five elements. By the linga he means the thirteen instruments: buddhi (intellect), ahamkara (the sense of 'I'), manas (the mind), and the ten powers of sensing and acting. His reasoning is that some things are never found apart from what goes with them: water is never without coolness, nor coolness without water; fire never without heat. So, Gaudapada says, when the subtle body leaves one body, it takes up another. It never stands without a support.

Carry water across a kitchen. It is always in something: a glass, then a jug, then a pot. You can pour it from one vessel into the next, but it never hangs in the air between them. The water is the subtle body. The vessels are the bodies it rests in, one after another, and the pouring is the passage from one life to the next.

One part of this sits close to today's mainstream view. Samkhya treats the linga, which includes intellect, ego and mind, as matter, part of prakriti (nature). It is not consciousness, which Samkhya places in purusha alone. Neuroscience also finds that perception, memory and thought depend on a physical brain. No working mind has been observed without one. The comparison with software, which runs only on some hardware, is loose but fair. Where the idea parts from current knowledge is rebirth. There is no established evidence that a bundle of mental capacities leaves one body and enters another. Samkhya's split between a material mind and a separate witnessing consciousness lines up with a live debate. Physicalists say consciousness is what the brain does. Dualists say it is something more. That question, the hard problem, is still open.
