For the sake of the purusha, through the chain of causes and their results, and by the far-reaching power of prakriti, the subtle body takes up its places, like an actor.
The question is simple. If the subtle body moves from life to life, what decides where it goes, and why does it move at all? Samkhya splits reality in two. Purusha is the witness, pure consciousness, which never acts. Prakriti is nature, everything that changes. The subtle body, linga, is prakriti's portable kit: intellect, ego, mind and the ten outer faculties (senses and organs of action), built from subtle elements. It has three drivers. First, the purpose of purusha. Gaudapada reads this as two goals: experience of the world, and finally seeing that purusha is not nature, which is freedom. Second, causes and results. He names the causes as merit and its opposite, and the results as rising or falling to a higher or lower birth. Third, prakriti reaches everywhere. Gaudapada compares it to a king who can act anywhere in his own land. So the same subtle body becomes a god, a human, an animal, as these forces dictate. In Samkhya's account, no creator is needed.
Picture a school play with a small cast. One child walks off as a king, slips behind the curtain, and comes back as a beggar, then as a donkey with paper ears. The child never changes. Only the costume does. The child is the subtle body. Each costume is a new physical body, chosen by what the play needs next.
Today's philosophy of mind would put the key claim plainly. Samkhya holds that a bundle of mind, memory and tendencies can leave one body and enter another. Mainstream neuroscience finds no evidence for this. Memory, mood and character track the living brain, and change when it is damaged. On rebirth itself, science has no accepted evidence either way it can test. Some of the picture travels better. Psychologists also describe the self as playing roles shaped by past habits, which loosely echoes the actor. And Samkhya's split between a conscious witness and an active, mechanical mind sits close to the hard problem of consciousness. Even a full account of the brain's workings does not yet explain why there is felt experience at all. That question remains open.
