Seven Fuels of Fortune

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 38.40

Meaning · English

Clear understanding, a quiet mind, mastery over oneself, cleanliness, no harsh words, and never doing what displeases a friend: these seven, Vidura says, are the fuel that keeps the flame of prosperity burning.

Vidura names the things that feed a good life, and most of them are inner. Take two words. Dama comes from a root meaning to tame, as one tames a horse: it is holding in your own impulses. Shauca means cleanliness, from a word for what is clear and unsoiled, in body and in dealings. Then the plain sense of each clause. Understanding means seeing a matter as it is. A quiet mind means not being tossed about by every provocation. Self-control and purity are the two words above. No harsh speech means that even a true thing is not thrown like a stone. And not doing what displeases friends means keeping the people close to you in mind when you act. The text counts seven, though the list as given names six, and the count is kept as Vidura gives it. Why does he say this to a sleepless king? Dhritarashtra is looking for security in power and treasure. Vidura answers that prosperity is a flame, and a flame lasts only while it is fed. What feeds it is character, not wealth. The harshness and heedlessness around the king are what let it die.

A small shop stays open year after year because the owner is tidy, fair, and pleasant even to a customer who haggles. Nothing about the stock is special. People return because of how they are treated, and the shop lasts on that.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one conversation from today in which your tone was sharper than the matter needed. Just see it plainly. 2. Tomorrow, before replying to something that irritates you, wait through one slow breath, then speak in a plain, level voice. 3. This week, ask yourself once about a close friend: is there something I do that quietly bothers them, and could I stop? 4. Tidy one small space you use daily, such as a desk or a bag.
