Sleepless Beside Guilt
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 38.42
Meaning · English
A man at fault who turns on someone blameless cannot sleep easily at night. He lies like one who shares his room with a snake.
The verse turns on two ideas. The first is aparādha, fault or offense. The word comes from a root sense of going wide of the mark, so it names someone who has already done wrong. The second is sarpa, the snake, from a root meaning to creep. A snake in the room is a danger you cannot see in the dark but cannot forget either. Now the clauses. A person is in the wrong. Instead of owning it, he sets himself against someone who is innocent, and he provokes or wrongs that person. The text says such a man does not sleep peacefully at night. He is like someone lying down in the same room as a snake. The snake is not an outside punishment. It is what he knows and has put beside himself. The verse sits in Vidura's talk about whom to avoid, right after the one who gives others nothing back and feels no shame. Vidura speaks to a king who is awake at midnight. Dhritarashtra is uneasy, and Vidura gives the reason: a man who has wronged the blameless carries his own unrest into every night. The point for a listener is practical. Such a person is not only harmful to others, he is never at rest himself, and that is worth seeing clearly before trusting or imitating him.
Think of a person who has left a cracked glass jar of something spoiled under his own bed. He can say nothing about it to anyone. Every night he lies above it, listening, unable to settle. The jar is the wrong he did to an innocent person, and the restless night is his own mind keeping watch over it.
1. Tonight, before sleep, take two quiet minutes and ask whether you are holding a grievance against someone who did you no real wrong. 2. If something comes up, write one plain sentence about what actually happened, leaving out what you wished had happened. 3. This week, when you meet someone who takes without returning anything, notice how restless or easy they seem. Watch only. Do not judge.
