Effort Wasted by Mismatch

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.31

Meaning · English

What is thrown into the sea is gone. Words spoken to someone who is not listening are gone. Teaching is gone on a person who has no hold over himself. Ghee poured on the ashes of a dead fire is gone.

The verse gives four cases of effort that goes nowhere, and each one fails for a different reason. Vidura's point is that the effort can be good and still be wasted if the place, the listener or the moment is wrong. Two ideas carry it. Ashraddha, not listening, is a hearer who has not turned toward the speaker, so the words land and vanish. Atmavan, a person who has himself in hand, is the opposite: someone whose mind obeys him. Without that, the scriptures have nothing to work on. Hutam, the offering, is ghee poured into a sacred fire. It means something only when the fire is alive. So the four clauses read: what goes into the sea cannot be recovered. Speech to a deaf ear is lost. Learning is lost on an uncontrolled mind. An offering on cold ashes is lost. Vidura is speaking to a king who cannot sleep and who has heard honest advice for years without acting on it. The verse tells Dhritarashtra why that advice keeps failing, and it also tells him to ask three things before starting anything: what the act is, who is doing it, and what it is for. Nilakantha reads the ashes as a fire that has gone out, meaning the act has lost its proper ground.

Picture someone pouring water carefully into a cup that has a crack along the bottom. The pouring is steady and the water is clean, but it runs straight out onto the table. Good effort needs a vessel that can hold it: the right listener, the right doer, the right purpose.

1. Before starting something that matters today, such as a hard conversation or a big task, stop for one minute and ask: what exactly am I doing, who is it for, and why? 2. If you plan to advise someone, notice whether they are listening or only waiting for you to finish. If not, wait for a better moment. 3. Tonight, pick one effort from the week that went nowhere. Write one line on which of the four it matched: lost at sea, unheard, unready, or cold ashes.
