Four Remedies, Each Matched

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.33

Meaning · English

Humility clears away disgrace. Prowess puts an end to failure. Forgiveness always overcomes anger. Auspicious rites destroy the marks of evil.

Vidura sets four troubles beside four answers, each one fitted to its trouble. Three words carry it. Vinaya, humility, comes from a root meaning to lead or train, so it is a trained, guided manner, not a show of smallness. Kshama, forgiveness, comes from a root meaning to bear or endure: it is the ability to take a blow without hitting back. Mangala, auspicious rite, is an act done to set a beginning right. The clauses run in order. A person who carries himself humbly sheds disgrace, because there is less in him for people to hold against him. Prowess, meaning real capacity and effort, ends failure. Forgiveness beats anger, and Vidura says it does so always, not just sometimes. Auspicious rites remove the signs of evil, the warning marks that gather around a bad undertaking. Why say this to Dhritarashtra at midnight? The king is awake with dread over a quarrel he has let grow. Vidura, by the text's account, is not offering comfort. He is showing that every trouble has a matching remedy, and that a remedy has to be chosen for the trouble in front of you. Prowess will not cure anger, and forgiveness will not mend a failure of skill. The king is asked to see what he faces before he reaches for anything.

A cook with a pan of oil gone smoking does not reach for a fan or a lid at random. Water would spit and spread the fire. She slides on the lid. A trouble has its own cure, and the wrong one makes it worse. The four pairs of the verse are four such matches.

1. Tonight, take one thing that is troubling you and write its name in a few words: anger, a failure, a bad name, a bad omen. 2. Beside it, write which of the four answers fits it: humility, effort, forgiveness, or a careful beginning. 3. Tomorrow, before starting one task, spend two minutes asking what the task is, who is doing it, and what it is for. 4. Notice whether you were about to use the wrong remedy, such as effort where forgiveness was needed.
