What Lengthens a Life

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.43

Meaning · English

A lowered head, kindness toward every living being, a readiness to pardon, and honor shown to friends: the learned say these add years to a person's life.

Vidura names four habits and says the learned count them as what lengthens life. The first is humility, which is not thinking small of yourself but not holding yourself above others. The second is love of all creatures, a kindness that reaches past family and allies to anyone who can feel pain. The third is forgiveness, which means letting a wrong done to you end with the wrong instead of carrying it for years. The fourth is respect for friends, which means treating the people who stand by you as worth honoring, not as tools. All four are about how a person acts toward others, and none is about strength or cleverness. Vidura's claim is that a life run on these lasts longer. The reason is easy to see in a man who lies awake, as the king does tonight. Pride, harm done to others, grudges and neglected friends each create enemies and fears, and they wear a person down from inside. Each of these habits does the opposite. The verse gives no method and no doctrine. It simply lists what the wise have observed, and it sits among Vidura's advice on how a ruler should live. Whoever asks of a planned act whether it is gentle, harmless, forgiving and loyal has asked something useful before beginning.

A well-used footpath across a field lasts for generations because people keep walking it gently and mending it where it washes out. A road that is raced over, torn up and left unrepaired breaks apart in a season. The four habits are that gentle upkeep, and a life kept up this way lasts.

1. Before one task or conversation today, stop for ten seconds and ask: will this hurt anyone, and will it dishonor someone who has helped me? 2. Think of one small wrong someone did you. Notice whether you are still carrying it, and say silently that you are setting it down. 3. In the evening, send one friend a short message of thanks, or thank them aloud. 4. When you speak to someone today, notice whether you are looking down on them or beside them.
