They tell an old and very sacred story about this, Uddhava. I will tell it to you; listen with a steady mind. A mendicant, scorned by wicked people, once sang it. He was calm, and he was remembering how his own deeds had ripened. In the land of Avanti there lived a brahmin, the richest of men, who earned his living by trade. He was a miser, full of desire and greed, and quick to anger. Relatives and guests were not honoured by him, not even with a kind word. His own house stood empty, and he himself was not given his pleasures in their season. His sons, kin, wives, daughters and servants, dejected, resented this ill-natured miser and did nothing to please him. His wealth was like a yaksha's. He had fallen from both worlds and had neither duty nor enjoyment. So the five who share a man's wealth grew angry with him.
Krishna opens a story and tells Uddhava to listen closely. The story is a song once sung by a beggar-monk who had been mistreated by cruel people, and who sang calmly, remembering how his own past actions had ripened. The monk was once a rich brahmin of Avanti. Three words describe him. Kadarya means a miser, someone who holds back even what ought to be spent. Vitta means wealth, and a yaksha is a spirit that guards buried treasure and never touches it, so yakshavitta means wealth that is only guarded, never used. Dharma here means right giving and duty, and kama means rightful enjoyment. He had neither. The clauses follow one another. He lived by trade and was the richest man around, yet greedy, lustful and easily angered. He gave relatives and guests no honour, not even a greeting. His house stood empty of company, and he did not even feed his own comforts at the proper time. His wife, children and servants were sad, and they did nothing to please him. He had lost this world and the next, since he gave nothing and enjoyed nothing. The five who share a man's wealth turned angry. The commentators name who these five are. Krishna tells this after speaking of how hard it is to stay steady under cruel words. The story shows where the sufferer came from, and that his later ruin has a cause he later admits. It asks Uddhava to hear the whole ordeal plainly, and to notice that wealth held back from everyone gives its owner nothing either.
Picture a water tank on a rooftop with its outlet pipe sealed shut. The water sits and grows stale. The garden below goes dry, and nobody drinks. The tank is the miser's wealth, held tight until it serves no one, himself included.
1. Tonight, think of one person you have not greeted warmly in a while, such as a relative, a neighbour or a helper at home. 2. Tomorrow, give them one small thing for free: a kind sentence, a cup of tea, five minutes of full attention. 3. Notice how you feel while holding back, and how you feel after giving. 4. This week, spend a little on something plainly good for your own body or home that you have been putting off.
A man sits in a large, quiet flat on his birthday. His phone is silent. He has money in the bank, and he can name every relative who stopped calling. Each time one of them asked for help, he found a reason to say no, and now the rooms feel as empty as the story's house. The verses say what he is missing. Wealth he never gives away buys him no goodwill, and wealth he never enjoys buys him no rest. The people near him have turned away, and his own life has gone grey. Ordinary experience agrees that people drift from someone who is always counting and never giving, and that being alone with a bank balance can wear on the mind. What the verses would change is small and sequential. He would see which habit emptied the house. He would offer a greeting, then a meal, then help, and he would let himself enjoy something. This does not promise that old hurts will mend or that lost years return. It is not a substitute for a doctor or counsellor if loneliness has grown into low mood that does not lift.
