Because he had slighted them, his store of merit ran out, generous Uddhava, and the wealth he had gathered with so much toil went to ruin. Kinsmen took some of it and thieves took some. Some was lost to fate and some to time, and some was taken by the king and the rulers, from this brahmin in name only. With his wealth gone, cut off from duty and from pleasure, and scorned by his own people, he fell into a worry he could not cross. Brooding long, the ruined man was worn down, his throat thick with tears, and a great weariness with it all rose in him.

Krishna is still telling Uddhava the story of the Avanti brahmin. This is the turn. Three words carry it. Avadhyana is contempt or neglect, here his long neglect of the five who had a claim on his wealth. Daiva is fate, what comes from beyond one's own doing. Nirveda is weariness with the whole chase, the colour draining out of craving. It is not plain sadness. The story goes in order. The merit that had propped up his fortune is spent, because he neglected those who were owed a share. The money he had worked so hard for goes. Relatives take a part and robbers take a part. Fate takes some, time takes some, and the king's officers take some. Krishna calls him a brahmin in name only, because his life no longer matched his birth. Without wealth he has neither duty nor pleasure left, and his own people, whom he never cared for, now ignore him. He sinks into a worry with no far shore. He brooding, weeping, throat choked, and out of that exhaustion nirveda rises. Krishna tells this to answer Uddhava's wish to know how a person truly lets go. The brahmin's grip was broken by loss, not by wisdom. The story asks the listener to notice how many hands wealth passes through, and how little of it was ever held.

A man spends years filling a tank on his roof, never checking the pipes. One by one the joints leak, a neighbour taps it and the sun dries what is left. One day he climbs up and finds it empty. The tank is the hoard, and the leaks are the many hands that can take what one person holds.

1. Tonight, take ten minutes and list what you own or save that you worry over most. 2. Beside each item, write who else has a claim on it or could take it: family, tax, thieves, time, chance. 3. Pick one item and give a small share of it this week to someone owed it, such as a relative, a guest, or a neighbour. 4. Notice how your chest feels afterward, and write one line about it.

A man in his fifties sits in a parked car outside the bank, holding a letter. The business he spent thirty years building has been sold off to pay debts, and his brother has stopped answering his calls. He cannot make himself turn the key. The story shows him what is happening. His losses did not come from one cause. Some came from his own choices, some from other people and some from plain luck, and he need not carry all of it as a single verdict on himself. The brahmin's long brooding with tears is allowed to be what it is, grief to be sat through, not hidden. And the weariness that follows can be a place to begin sorting what was truly his to care for from what was only chased. Ordinary experience confirms that people in deep money trouble often withdraw, and that isolation makes the worry heavier. The verse does not promise the money back or the family restored. It also does not replace a doctor or a counsellor for someone whose despair has settled in for weeks. It says only that this weariness has a place in the story and does not have to be the end of it.
