Meaning · English

Life that is beneficial or harmful, happy or unhappy; what is good and what is bad for that life; its measure, and life itself: the knowledge where these are taught is called Ayurveda.

Ayurveda names four kinds of life. A life can be beneficial or harmful, and it can be happy or unhappy. These are two separate questions. One asks how life feels to the person living it. The other asks what that life does in the world. Charaka spells them out later in the work. A happy life is free of illness, with strength, working senses and the means to enjoy them. A beneficial life is lived truthfully, with self-restraint and care for others. Then the verse lists what a science of life must teach. It must teach what helps life and what harms it. It must teach life's measure, meaning how long a life lasts and how that can be judged. And it must teach what life itself is. Knowledge that covers all of this earns the name Ayurveda. So the science is wider than treating disease. It weighs food, habits and conduct by one test: does this support a life that is long, glad and good?

Think of the manual that comes with a new bicycle. It tells you what keeps the bicycle running well, what wears it out, how long each part should last, and how the machine works. Ayurveda calls itself that kind of manual for a human life. It explains what life is, what helps it, what harms it, and what its span can be.

Medicine today separates how long a person lives from how well they live. Doctors speak of quality of life, and of years lived in good health, alongside lifespan itself. That matches the verse's habit of asking more than one question about a life. Psychology also distinguishes between feeling good and living a life with meaning and contribution. That echoes the split between a happy life and a beneficial one. Modern health definitions include wellbeing as well as the absence of disease. Where the two part ways is on measure. Doctors can estimate risk from age, habits and illness, but they cannot read a person's span of life from bodily signs, as the classical texts describe doing. That part has no modern match.
