Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 1.42

Meaning · English

The union of body, senses, mind and self is life. By other names it is called the one that sustains, the living, the ever-moving and the unbroken thread.

Charaka defines a life as four things joined. Sharira is the body. The indriyas are the senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Sattva is the mind, which thinks, wants and decides. Atman is the self, the one who knows and experiences all the rest. Apart, these four are not a life. A body with no one in it is not a living person. Joined, they are. Then come four other names, each showing one side of the same thing. Dhari: what holds and sustains, keeping the whole together. Jivitam: simply being alive. Nityaga: ever-passing, changing from moment to moment and never lasting as it is. Anubandha: the unbroken thread, life carried on from one birth to the next. Why start here? A science that studies life has to say first what life is. The definition carries a consequence. Care given to the body alone reaches only one of the four parts. So, by implication, health in this system's terms includes the senses, the mind and the self as well.

Picture a clay oil lamp burning on a windowsill. There is the bowl, the oil, the wick and the flame. Take any one away and there is no light. The flame is never the same from one second to the next, yet it burns on without a break. Life works the same way: four parts joined, always moving, one continuous burning.

Today's medicine agrees with much of this. Doctors now treat body and mind as one system. Long stress can disturb sleep, digestion and heart rhythm. Illness in turn wears down mood. Losing sight or hearing is known to affect a person's wellbeing and connection with others, so the senses rightly count. The idea that life is always moving also fits. The body constantly breaks down and rebuilds its tissues, and its steady state is held in place by continuous adjustment, never by standing still. The fourth part, the self as something distinct from the mind, has no match in medicine. Medicine defines death by the stopping of brain or heart function, not by a self departing. That part is a philosophical and spiritual claim, outside what physiology can test.
