Meaning · English
For all things, at all times, sameness is the cause of increase, and difference is the cause of decrease. Both are put to work.
Two words carry this teaching. Samanya means sameness: when a thing meets what is like it, it grows. Vishesha means difference: when a thing meets what is unlike it, it lessens. Charaka says this holds for all things and at all times. That makes it a law, not a tip. The last line adds that both are used: increasing and decreasing are each part of the work. The verse gives no reason; it simply states the rule. Ayurveda explains elsewhere how the rule is applied. It describes the body through qualities, such as heavy or light, hot or cold, oily or dry. It also names three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha, the working forces of movement, heat and structure. Vata, which is dry and cold, is said to grow with dry, cold food and weather, and to settle with warm, moist ones. What the rule asks of a life is attention: noticing what each meal, season or habit adds, and to what.
Think of filling a bath that has come out too hot. Pour in more hot water and it climbs higher. Turn on the cold tap and it eases back toward comfortable. The same two taps fill the tub either way. Like added to like raises the level, and its opposite brings it down. A healer, in this teaching, works both taps.
Part of this sits well with today's physiology. The body keeps itself steady by correcting in the opposite direction. A chilled person is warmed, a dehydrated one is given fluids, and an overheated one is cooled. Rebuilding wasted muscle needs protein, which loosely echoes the idea that like builds like. Beyond that, the match is weak. Modern nutrition does not sort foods by hot and cold or heavy and light the way Ayurveda does. These qualities have no direct laboratory measure. The doshas have no modern counterpart. A single law of sameness and difference for all things is a philosophical claim, not a medical finding. It is best read as a practical way of thinking about balance. It is not a mechanism that has been tested.
