Mind, self and body: these three stand together like three staffs bound as one. Through their joining the living world holds up, and on it everything rests. That joining is the person. It is conscious. It is held to be the subject of this Veda, and for its sake this Veda has been made known.

Three things make a living person. Sattva is the mind. Atma is the self, the knowing presence at the centre. Sharira is the body. Atreya says they stand like a tridanda, three staffs tied together, and the living being holds up through their samyoga, their joining. Everything rests on that joining. Together the three are what the text calls the person, and that person is chetana, aware and alive to the world. Then the teaching names its own purpose. This joined person is the adhikarana, the ground or subject matter, of Ayurveda, and the science was made known for that person's sake. So the healer does not look after a body alone, or a mind alone. The text teaches this early because it sets the scope of everything after it. Care has to keep the whole person in view, because the three stand together. A long, good life, in this system's terms, is never a matter of the body by itself.

Picture three sticks leaned together over a campfire, their tops lashed, a cooking pot hanging from the knot. No single stick can stand on its own. Pull one away and the other two fall, and the pot goes down with them. The sticks are mind, self and body. The pot is a whole human life, held up by the three leaning on one another.

Today's medicine agrees with much of this in its own language. Doctors now treat mind and body as one connected system. Long stress disturbs sleep, digestion and blood pressure. Ongoing pain or illness wears down mood. Low mood changes appetite and energy. Many clinicians work from a biopsychosocial view, caring for the person rather than the organ, which is close in spirit to Charaka's starting point. Where the two part ways is the self. Charaka's atma is a conscious principle distinct from mind and body, and modern medicine has no measure or match for it; it treats awareness as something the brain does. That question belongs to philosophy and faith, not the clinic. The practical point, that care falters when it looks at one part alone, stands on firm ground.
