Meaning · English
Care is of three kinds: resting on the divine, resting on reasoning, and mastery of the mind. Care resting on the divine is mantras, herbs, gems, auspicious acts, offerings, gifts, fire rites, vows, atonement, fasting, rites for well-being, bowing, pilgrimage and the like. Care resting on reasoning is the fitting combination of foods and medicines. Mastery of the mind is restraining it from harmful objects.
Charaka sorts all care into three. The first, daivavyapashraya, leans on the divine. It covers reciting mantras, herbs and gems, auspicious acts, offerings and gifts, and the fire rite called homa. It also covers vows and observances, atonement for wrongs, fasting, rites for well-being, bowing before what one reveres, and going on pilgrimage. The second, yuktivyapashraya, leans on yukti, which means reasoned planning. It is the work of putting the right foods and medicines together for this person and this trouble. The third, sattvavajaya, means victory over the mind. It is the practice of holding the mind back from things that do one harm. The verse gives no reason for having three. Care, then, is more than a medicine. Meals, faith and attention are all tended, and each is counted as part of healing.
Think of a kitchen stool with three legs. It stands steady even on an uneven floor, and if you take away one leg it tips over. Charaka's three kinds of care work like those legs. Food and medicine are one leg. A mind held back from what harms it is another. The rites that give a person hope and meaning are the third.
A family doctor would recognise much of this. Choosing foods and medicines to fit the person and the problem is the centre of ordinary medicine. Steering the mind away from harmful habits and thoughts has a close modern cousin in psychological therapies, which work on attention and patterns of thinking. Stress is also known to affect sleep, digestion and recovery. On the first kind of care the picture is mixed. Prayer, ritual and a caring community can comfort people and help them cope with illness. There is no good evidence that mantras, gems or offerings change the course of a disease, and gems have no modern match at all. Fasting can be unsafe for people who are pregnant, diabetic, elderly, very young or already ill. Rites belong beside proper treatment, never in its place.
