By this teaching, no substance is found in the world that is not a medicine, when one has in view this or that method of using it, and this or that purpose.
Atreya has just shown how every substance is built from five elements, earth, water, fire, air and space, and what each kind does in the body. From that he draws one wide conclusion: nothing in the world is found that cannot serve as medicine. Two conditions carry the sentence. Yukti is the method: how a thing is prepared, combined, timed and given. Artha is the purpose: what it is meant to do. Chakrapani reads this as a limit as much as a promise. A substance heals by some method, for some purpose, not everywhere and not in every illness. He adds that even things harmful by nature can find a use with the right handling, and that grass and dust count too, as aids in treatments such as sweating. The reason comes from the verses before: every substance carries qualities, and qualities act on the body. For a long, good life, what matters is knowing why a thing is used, not only what it is.
Think of the flame on a kitchen stove. Under a pot it cooks the evening meal. Held near cold hands it warms them. Left against a curtain, the same flame burns the house. The fire never changes. The hand that places it, and the reason it is placed there, decide whether it serves or harms. Substances, in Charaka's teaching, work the same way.
Much of this sits well with what is known today. Many medicines in use began as plants, moulds or minerals, and toxicologists have long said that the dose makes the poison: water, salt or a common painkiller helps or harms depending on amount, form and the person taking it. Doctors also know that one drug can suit one patient and endanger another, which is close to Charaka's point about method and purpose. Where modern medicine parts ways is the five-element scheme behind it. Earth, water, fire, air and space as the makeup of substances has no match in chemistry. Read literally, the line could sound like permission to treat oneself with whatever is at hand. It is the opposite: it says healing comes from skilled, informed use.
