Fire Hidden in Wood

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.13

Meaning · English

Fire hidden in its wood is not seen, yet it is not gone; a drill brings it out again. Both are in the body like that, reached through Om.

People once made fire by spinning a hard stick against a softer block of wood. Before that, nothing in the wood looks like flame. Still, the fire has not been destroyed. It is there in a form too fine to see, and rubbing brings it into view. The same holds for the body. The self within and the larger reality are both present there, unseen. Om, the sacred syllable, is the drill that brings them to light.

A radio in a quiet kitchen plays nothing, yet the station's signal is already filling the room. Nobody has to create it. Turning the dial to the right frequency is enough for the music to come through. The signal is the reality already present, unseen, in the body, and Om is the turn of the dial that makes it heard.
