Meditation as Steady Friction
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 1.14
स्वदेहमरणिं कृत्वा प्रणवं चोत्तरारणिम् । ध्याननिर्मथनाभ्यासाद्देवं पश्यन्निगूढवत्
Meaning · English
Make the body the lower fire-stick and Om the upper one. Through the steady rubbing of meditation, one comes to see God, who had only seemed hidden.
Fire was once made with two sticks: a flat one held still below, and another worked against it until a spark caught. The seer assigns the parts. The body is the still base. Om, the sacred syllable, is the moving stick. Meditation is the rubbing, and the word for practice means doing it again and again, not once. What appears is God. The phrase 'as if hidden' matters: God was never missing, only unseen until the work brought it into view.
Picture someone on a cold morning rubbing their palms together. No heater is involved and nothing is added. The warmth comes from two things they already have, pressed together and kept moving. Stop after one stroke and nothing happens. Keep going and heat builds. The two palms are the body and Om, and the warmth is what was already there to be found.
