I am seated in the heart of every living being. From me come memory, knowledge, and forgetting. Through all the Vedas, I alone am to be known. I am the author of the Vedanta, and I alone know the Vedas' meaning.
Three words carry the first half. Smriti is memory, what stays with you from the past. Jnana is knowledge, the clear grasp of something in front of you. Apohana is the taking away, the loss or fading of both. Krishna tells Arjuna that he sits in the heart of every living being, and that all three come from him: remembering, knowing, and forgetting. Forgetting is named beside the other two, so it is not treated as a mere failure. The second half turns to the scriptures. Veda means knowledge that is heard and handed down. Vedanta means the end, or culmination, of the Vedas, the Upanishadic teaching. Krishna says that all the Vedas aim at making him known, that he is the author of the Vedanta, and that he alone knows what the Vedas mean. The reason follows from the verses before it: he has just said he sustains earth and digests food, and now he says he is present even in the mind's workings. Shankara reads the gain and loss of memory and knowledge as given according to a person's own past deeds. Ramanuja stresses God as the inner controller who grants them. Madhva stresses that God alone is the true subject of the Vedas.
A man who lives in a house walks its corridors and turns lights on in one room and off in another. Guests see rooms glowing or dark and think the rooms decide. It is one hand at the switch. Remembering, knowing, and forgetting are the lit and dark rooms; the one seated in the heart is the hand.
1. Next time a name or word slips away, stop straining for ten seconds. Breathe, and let it go for now. 2. When it returns later, even hours on, notice where you were and what you were doing. 3. Tonight, for two minutes, think of one thing you remembered today and one thing you forgot. Name each without blame. 4. Say quietly that both came to you, and that neither was fully yours to command.
A grandmother stands at a wedding hall, smiling at a young girl who has just greeted her. She cannot find the girl's name, though she held her as a baby. She grows tense, then gives up and goes to wash her hands. At the tap, the name returns. The verse speaks to this moment. Krishna tells Arjuna that memory, knowledge, and forgetting all arise from him, seated in the heart. So the grandmother need not treat the blank as an enemy or the return as her own victory. She can greet the girl warmly without the name, ask how her mother is, and wait. Ordinary experience confirms that a word often comes back once we stop gripping it. This leaves some things untouched. It does not promise that the name will come, or that a failing memory is only a lesson. If forgetting becomes frequent, strange, or frightening, a doctor should see it, and the grandmother's family should not wait.
