The Supreme Soul Within

Bhagavad Gita 15.17

Meaning · English

Besides these two there is another, the Supreme Divine Personality, called the Supreme Soul. He enters the three worlds and supports them. He is indestructible, and he is their controller.

Four words carry it. Purusha means a person, someone who can be addressed, not a blind force. Paramatma joins parama, highest, with atma, self: the Self above all selves. Ishvara comes from a root meaning to rule, so it names the one in charge. Avyaya is a-vyaya, not spent, not worn away. Krishna tells Arjuna that besides the perishable and the imperishable beings just named, there is another, called the Supreme Soul. He enters the three worlds, meaning all of creation, and supports them the way a pillar carries a roof. He does not decay under the load, and he controls what he holds. Krishna says this to a man watching his world about to break. He points to what stays under the breaking, and says it is not far off but inside, holding. Shankara reads the Supreme Soul as the one Self, Ishvara, the real nature of every knower. Ramanuja reads him as a Supreme Person distinct from all souls, ruling them from within, they being his body. Madhva reads him as Vishnu, wholly other than and above both kinds of beings. What Krishna wants from Arjuna is recognition.

A glove lies limp on a table. Slip a hand inside and it stands up, grips, and moves. The glove frays with use, but the hand does not. The glove is the three worlds, the hand is the Supreme Soul entering them, holding them up and directing them, and outlasting them.

1. At one meal today, look at the food before the first bite and name three things that had to hold together for it to reach you: soil, rain, someone's hands. 2. Afterwards, sit for one minute and notice that your breath keeps going without your effort. 3. When something upsets you today, stop for one breath and say quietly: it enters, it supports, it controls. 4. Tonight, write one sentence on what you noticed.

A woman sits beside her father's hospital bed at three in the morning. The monitor numbers rise and fall, a nurse comes and goes, and every sound seems to announce a change. She watches the screen as if watching it could hold him here. Krishna's words give her another place to rest her attention. Everything in front of her, the body, the machines, the corridor, is among the perishable things. Krishna teaches that the Supreme Soul has entered all of it and holds it up, and does not fail. So she can keep watch without gripping the numbers. She can breathe more slowly, speak gently to her father, and let the night be carried by something other than her own vigilance. Ordinary experience confirms that a steady thought lowers the pitch of panic. The verse does not change the diagnosis or take away grief. It is no substitute for the doctors and nurses, whose work she still needs to trust and follow.
