Beyond Passing and Staying

Bhagavad Gita 15.18

Meaning · English

Because I stand beyond the perishable, and higher even than the imperishable, I am celebrated in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Divine Personality.

Three words carry this. Kshara comes from a root meaning to flow away or waste: whatever changes and ends. Akshara is the same word with a not in front: what does not wear away. Purushottama joins purusha, a person, with uttama, highest: the highest Person. Krishna has just sorted everything into two kinds, the things that pass and the part that stays. Now he says he is beyond the first and higher even than the second. A listener might have thought the unchanging was the end of the search. Krishna says it is not. The reason he gives is a "therefore". Because he is this, the world calls him by that name, and so do the Vedas. Ordinary speech and sacred text agree on it, and he points to that as his witness. What he asks of Arjuna is only to see rightly who is speaking. Shankara reads the imperishable as the seed-power of the world, maya, and Krishna as the Self beyond it. Ramanuja reads the two as souls bound in matter and souls set free, with Krishna as Lord of both. Madhva reads the imperishable as Lakshmi, and Krishna as higher even than she.

A play is running. The actors enter and leave, and the stage stays under their feet. Neither is the one who wrote the play and lit it. The actors are what passes, the stage is what stays, and the author, present in both yet belonging to neither, is the Person Krishna speaks of.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes by a window and name two things you can see that are changing, such as light, traffic or leaves. 2. Then name one thing that seems fixed, such as a hill, a wall or a road. 3. Ask quietly whether the one doing the noticing is either of these. Note what that question feels like, and leave it unanswered. 4. Repeat once during the week, when something is troubling you.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while her father is in surgery. Her mind swings between two grips. One is on every number the monitors might show, the passing things. The other is on a fixed promise that he will be fine, the thing she wants to stay. Both tire her, and neither is in her hands. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is neither the changing nor the unchanging but beyond both, and that the world and the Vedas name him so. For her, that gives the mind a third place to rest. She can let the numbers be numbers, and let the demand for a guaranteed ending loosen. She can turn to the One the text says stands beyond both, and sit with a plainer prayer than bargaining. Ordinary experience bears out that a mind with somewhere to rest grips less hard. The verse does not say the surgery will succeed. It does not remove fear or grief, and it does not replace the surgeon or the nurses who are doing the work.
