Knowing Leads to Loving

Bhagavad Gita 15.19

Meaning · English

Whoever knows me thus, without a doubt, as the Supreme Divine Personality, is one with complete knowledge. Such a person worships me with their whole being, Arjun, son of Bharat.

Three words carry the verse. Asammudha means not bewildered: a is not, sammudha is confused, deluded. It describes a mind with no fog left on this one point, not a mind that has never asked questions. Sarva-vit means all-knowing: sarva is all, vit is one who knows. Bhava means a state of being or feeling, so sarva-bhava is with every state of one's being, heart, mind and action together. Krishna tells Arjuna that anyone who knows him without confusion as the Supreme Divine Personality, the one just described as higher than the perishable and the imperishable, has complete knowledge. Such a person does not stop at knowing. They worship him with all of themselves. The reason is that half-knowing leaves a person divided, giving part of the mind to God and part to doubt. Clear knowing removes the division, and devotion follows without effort. What Krishna asks of the listener is to know him clearly and then to give everything, not a fraction. The commentators read it differently. Shankara takes the all-knowing person as one who knows the Self behind everything. Ramanuja takes the worship as loving devotion that real knowledge naturally becomes. Madhva stresses knowing God as distinct from and above every soul and all of nature.

A man spends an evening checking every tap in a dark house, one by one. Then he finds the main valve in the cellar and understands how every pipe is fed. The scattered fumbling stops. Knowing the one source steadies his hand everywhere, as knowing Krishna is said to settle the whole person.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for five minutes and finish this sentence aloud: "What I hold highest is..." Say it plainly, in your own words. 2. Notice where a small doubt or a divided feeling comes up as you say it. Do not argue with it. Just see where it sits. 3. Tomorrow, choose one ordinary task, such as washing dishes or a phone call. For its length, give it your whole attention, as an offering to what you named.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while his father is in surgery. His mind runs in six directions: the bill, the doctor's face, his sister's call, what he failed to say last week. Nothing he does helps, and all the running leaves him spent. Krishna's teaching points to a different posture. First the man names plainly what he trusts most, without hedging. Then he puts the phone down and gives the wait itself to that trust, with his breath, his hands and his attention together in one direction. The fragments do not vanish, but they stop pulling against each other. Ordinary experience agrees that a divided mind tires faster than a settled one. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It speaks of wholeness of attention, not of outcomes. Where a person is unwell or frightened beyond bearing, a doctor or a trusted friend is still needed.
