Bhagavad Gita 16.15

Meaning · English

I am wealthy, and born among highly placed relatives. Who else is there like me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give alms, I shall rejoice. So speak those deluded by ignorance.

Two words carry the verse. Ajnana is ignorance, literally not-knowing: a = not, jnana = knowing. Vimohita comes from moha, a clouding of the mind, so it means bewildered or befuddled. Together they say the speaker is confused, not wicked. Abhijana, the relatives, is the circle one is born among, here counted as part of one's own worth. Krishna gives Arjuna the words of a person who has everything and measures himself by it. He is rich. His family is well placed. He can find no one his equal. Then come three plans: he will perform sacrifices, give alms and enjoy himself. The good deeds are not what Krishna faults. What he faults is the ground they grow from, the question 'who is like me?', which turns even giving into a way to be seen. Krishna's reason is that this is ignorance. The man takes borrowed things, money and kin, for his own measure. Shankara reads the sacrifice and charity as done for fame and show. Ramanuja reads them as spoiled by pride, since they leave out the Lord. Madhva reads the boast as forgetting who is actually supreme. The verse asks the listener to notice how easily a good act can carry a boast inside it.

A small child climbs to the top step of a staircase and announces that he is the tallest person in the house. He is standing on the step. Wealth and well-placed relatives work the same way: they lift a person up, and he mistakes the lift for his own height.

1. Tonight, recall one thing you gave or did for someone this week. Ask quietly whether you hoped anyone would hear of it. 2. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself comparing your house, job or family with someone else's, say silently, 'That is a step, not my height.' Then carry on. 3. Once this week, give something small without telling anyone, not even afterwards. Notice how it sits with you the next morning.

A man stands at his daughter's engagement dinner, watching the hall fill. He counts the officials who came, the cars outside, what the caterer cost. Already he is composing what he will tell his brother, and planning a donation to the temple that people will notice. The verse slows that moment in steps. First it names the thought underneath: 'who is like me?' Then it shows the giving and the celebrating attached to that thought, so that even a generous gift is partly a display. Krishna calls this ignorance, a clouding, not a crime. Seen that way, the man can ask what the evening is for, and let the guests simply be guests. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: when a person keeps score against others, the score is never settled, and rest does not come. The verse does not promise that he will stop feeling pride, or that his brother will stop comparing. It does not make the dinner easier to pay for. It only offers a clearer view of what he is doing while he does it.
